The great thing about working in an engineering driven company is the focus on the core product–aka ‘The Code.’ As a sales guy, I’d rather bring a product to my customers that does what’s promised, is well-architected and solidly designed.
But, even when the engineering team has checked in the fixes for the last showstopper bug, the QA team’s dashboard is showing nothing but green dots, there is a separate but equally necessary set of things outside The Code that you need to cross the finish line of a successful release.
While there are some outstanding books to help you get your startup off the ground (most notably The Startup Owners Manual by Steve Blank and Bob Dorf), I’ve found it helpful to have a very quick checklist that I can refer to in building the go-to-market plan. In presentation form, I use this to help provide context and help others in the organization understand what is being built or needs to be created alongside The Code for a successful product introduction.
