Vegan sushi. So, ebi, ahi, and you, hamachi, you all can relax now. They don’t take reservations. I recommend getting in line around 4:30-4:45pm (they open at 5). When you’re at the front of the line, they’ll either seat you if space permits or put your name on the list and text you when your table is ready. If you’re not ready to eat that early, you can ask for a later seating. You’ll still have to stand by (plenty of bars nearby) and await the text message that they’re ready to seat you.

Shizen
370 14th St at Valencia San Francisco
Nearby bars where you can wait, should you show up late for dinner, i.e. 5:15
The Armory Club (closest, straight down 14th St at Mission on the corner)
If you’re taking your mom from out-of-town, you might skip to one of the next options…
The Crafty Fox Ale House, 1700 Mission X  13th Street
About a 7 minute walk around the corner & up Mission St
Elixir, 3200 16th Street X Guerrero
About 15 minutes’ walk but a local feeling bar with very good mixed drinks. The age of the woodwork and the bias towards whiskey-based cocktails compels me to describe the atmosphere as hipstery
And, if it’s still bright and sunny at 5:30pm and you’re not yet feeling like going HAM, you’ve got Four Barrel Coffee right around the corner at 375 Valencia, or Samovar Tea, further down the block at 411 Valencia
